Monstera
The Monstera is a beautiful and very popular plant from the heart of the tropics, and I must say that they have long been favorites among indoor plants. All Monstera belongs to the aroid family with an epiphytic lifestyle.
In our time, 38 species and about 10 varieties of Monsteras have been recorded. Some of the popular species are attributed to other genera, for example, earlier a Monstera Pertusa or leaky was considered as Rhaphidophora Pertusa or Rafidophora full of holes or punctured.
Of all the species, the most often Monsteras are:
- Subpinnata
- Dilacerata
- Epipremnoides
- Barrieri
- Obliqua
- Deliciosa
- Dubia
- Molinae
- Spruceana
- Xanthospatha
- Acacoyaguensis
Monstera Subpinnata
- Feathery foliage
- Palm-like plant
The Monstera Subpinnata is a plant native to Ecuador with unusual feathery fragmented leaves. The foliage of Subphinnata is widely segmented, can get 12 inches long and about 8 inches wide. As the vine grows, it remains narrow and slender, which sets it apart from many other Monstera.
FYI Monstera Subphinnata is a tropical plant that is very easy to grow, just keep it free from frost and cold temperatures. Also, remember to rotate your Monstera periodically so that it grows evenly on all sides.
One thing to know about is the weaker the roots, the larger and healthier your plant will be. When the plant becomes dependent on roots, the growth slows down.
Monstera Dilacerata
- The cuts are similar to the leaves of the Monstera Molinae
The Monstera Dilacerata is often confused with an Epipremnum Pinnatum, Monstera Pinnapartitum, Rhaphidophora Decursiva, and Monstera Deliciosa. The plant is a cross of the Deliciosa and Molinae. The leaf blades are lighter and smaller than those of Deliciosa and the cuts on the leaves are also larger than in both representatives, but the type of such cuts is similar to the cuts of the Molinae leaves. In a natural habitat, the plant rises to a height of about 33 to 66 feet, without touching the ground when it's this big.
The plant can turn your wall into a tropical jungle in a few years. But when grown indoors, it is better to grow the Monstera Dilacerata on a high sphagnum totem, because the plant can easily grow up to 2 meters in height.
Another important point to be aware of when caring for Monstera Dilacerata is that the plant requires regular pruning to keep the vines from becoming leggy to have a beautiful and thick Monstera.
Monstera Epipremnoides
- Foliage similar to the Adansonii
The Monstera Epipremnoides is also called an older brother of Monstera Adansonii. This is due to the size of its leaves, which are slightly larger than those of the Monstera Adansonii, but they are still full of holes.
The Monstera Epipremnoides is also a slow-grower. It is capable of producing about a leaf per month under indoor growing conditions. The leaves are massive. The Epipremnoides is a climber, therefore, for comfortable growth, it needs a totem or a moss pole, to which the plant attaches its aerial roots.
Monstera Barrieri
- Pinnate leaves
- Matte foliage
- Adult plants have asymmetrical stems
In natural conditions, the Monstera Barrieri reaches 10 m, just a tropical giant. It reminds of the Monstera Spruceanа, only the leaf blades are darker in color and the width and number of blades are different. The Barrieri leaves are pinnate, with narrow lobes extending to or near the base. These lobes are narrow, oblong-lanceolate, and about 5 times longer than wide. The very leaf plate of the plant is matte and on both sides.
The adult plants have asymmetrical stems.
Monstera Obliqua
- elliptical fancy leaves
- slightly oblong, pointed at the ends
The Monstera Obliqua is a visitor from the rainforests of Brazil, who is already loved by many. It is a climbing vine that tends to grow vertically and needs support in order to do this.
This type of Monstera has very fancy leaves and they are elliptical, slightly oblong, pointed at the ends. Elongated slots of different sizes appear in rows from the middle of the sheet plate. The length of these leaves is approximately 20 cm, and their width will not be 6 cm.
Caring for the Monstera Obliqua is simple, but comfortable conditions give the leaves strength and large size.
Monstera Deliciosa
- The most common varieties
- Also the biggest one
The most gigantic, the most popular, the most of the most plant. This tropical beauty is native to the forests of America, Brazil, and Mexico.
Since Monsteras are vines, they can live like epiphytes digging into trees or shrubs with their aerial roots. The Monstera Deliciosa is a fairly voluminous plant and is recommended to place it in large rooms, such as a hall, living room, or spacious office.
This plant needs support and to be moistened regularly.
Monstera Dubia
- Smal-sized variety
- Heart-shaped leaves
The Monstera Dubia is mostly seen as one climbing the pole. It is a small-sized species of the Monstera that grows in a warm environment. Even indoors, Monstera Dubia can grow to an impressive height, about 3 to 10 feet in height, under the right conditions.
The Dubia has beautiful variegated heart-shaped leaves and can grow to about 5 inches in length. As it grows, the leaves cling to the support or pillar of moss that you are using and then it looks like shingles, because they lie on the surface like that.
Monstera Molinae
Native to Costa Rica, Panama. There is not much information about this species except for a few pictures online as it is a newly-discovered plant.
Monstera Spruceana
- Oblong-ovoid shape
- Mature levels are leathery
- Grown foliage is matte
And as you probably already understood, the types of Monstera are very diverse. And the Monstera Spruceana species is native to Bolivia, northern Brazil, Colombia, and many more countries. This is a beautiful plant that will surprise you with its peculiarity, and it lies in the fact that the juvenile form of this Monstera Spruceana begins its growth pressed against the owner. And during this period, the appearance of the plant is similar to shingles.
Monstera Spruceana can grow as an epiphyte as well as a hemiepiphyte. And before the Spruceana begins to mature, it grows to 3 feet. And as the leaf plate begins to transform, it acquires an oblong-ovoid shape and then divides into lobes. And already mature leaves of Monstera Spruceana become leathery with a faint sheen on the upper side. Fully grown leaves may still be dull matte and slightly paler in color.
The main feature of the mature leaf is its wide auricles. The mature leaves of Monstera Spruceana are on average 50 to 70 cm long and 25 to 40 cm wide. The petiole of Monstera Spruceana is usually one-third to two-thirds the length of the leaf. The petioles are usually medium green and slightly glossy in color.
Monstera Spruceana is a plant that hobbyists and collectors alike will want to have.
Monstera Xanthospatha
- rare plant
- Oblong leaves
- The shape is between arrow and heart
The Monstera Xanthospatha is a rare exotic species that most likely did not descend from a complex of alpine species, but rather from some lowland ancestor.
The leaves of Monstera Xanthospatha are oblong, somewhere between arrow-shaped and heart-shaped, bright green in color. Famous holes appear on the leaf blade as the plant matures. The Xanthospatha always differs from other species of Monstera in its dark yellow abaxial surface of the cover.
Also, you should know that this is a curly Monstera and will definitely appreciate a growth grid or any other support that will help her grow.
Monstera Acacoyaguensis
- The leaf is subcortical, shiny along the axis
- Ovoid shape
The Monstera Acacoyaguensis is another species of climbing Monstera with beautiful foliage similar to a Monstera Deliciosa. The plant has a well-developed root system, and it is simple and unpretentious to grow.
The Acacoyaguensis is easily distinguished from an Adansonii by its much longer stem, cover, and ear. The stem of an adult Monstera Acacoyaguensis is smooth, green, 3-5 cm thick, the petiole is approximately equal to the length of the blade.
The leaf plates of the plant are convex and erect; also the leaf is subcortical, shiny along the axis. The leaves are lighter in color from below, and their shape is ovoid, about twice as long as wide, this is about 60-85 cm in length, 35-45 cm in width, it should also be noted, and you can see that the tip of the leaf is sharp.
