Let's talk about rare plants that are good and worse for a beginner and it's only about Philodendrons since those plants have lots of different forms and shapes and are easy to care for.
Best for beginners
Philodendron Gloriosum
The Philodendron Gloriosum is a classic among plants. This Philodendron belongs to the crawling type by the type of growth, so they do not need a pillar for support. They are great for beginners due to the fact that they:
- very very beautiful
- easy care
- fast-growers
Note that many creepers are easy to care for. There are several varieties or forms of Philodendron Gloriosum: a round form, a dark form, a regular form, and they will all look slightly different.
Philodendron Holtonianum
The Philodendron Holtonianum is definitely worth recommending because it is a really very simple to care for plant and you should not have any problems with it.
This plant has unusual leaves, already in a formed leaf, the lateral parts are shorter than the central part, which is quite long. The trunk of the plant has aerial roots, and if they are long enough and therefore ready for planting, then you can divide the plant into cuttings and propagate.
Another thing you should know is that Holtonianum is a climber, which means that he will need support for growth, or a pillar that he can climb.
Philodendron McDowell
The hybrid of the two Philodendrons, Gloriosum and Pastazanum, the Philodendron McDowell. This variety has large, velvety, heart-shaped leaves. McDowell is also a crawling species.
The only downside to this plant is that it grows slowly, but totally worth it.
Philodendron Giganteum
Go ahead and the next one from today's list is Philodendron Giganteum, it can also be safely advised for beginners. This Philodendron has really amazing leaves, they are variegated in color, similar to marble. They are also very large plants, and as the plant develops, its leaves also become large. Giganteum is easy to maintain and easy to grow as it tolerates watering and moisture. As for the price, they are not super cheap but also not very expensive, it rather depends on the circumstances.
The only downside is the gangly thing that comes with the cuttings-to-leaf ratio when you swing a longer patio and a slightly smaller leaf. This plant is not a climber, and it will also take a little time for the Philodendron to grow.
Philodendron Florida Ghost
The beauty of this plant is in its gorgeous shaped leaves and the fact that it is very tolerant of any problems that may arise and is also resistant to moisture. Speaking of leaves, they can be creamy white at first, and then it goes away and they turn bright green. The Philodendrons Florida Ghost grows fairly quickly and responds very well to additional light sources. They are also reasonably priced and affordable enough that they are a great option for newbies.
Philodendron Jerry Horne
The next representative is from Ecuador and this is Philodendron Jerry Horne. This plant is a climber, it grows climbing up and it has amazing-shaped leaves.
And I would like to add that the shape and color of the leaves can be slightly changed depending on growing conditions. For example, in a predominantly shaded place, the leaves will be slightly lighter, the shape may also differ slightly from what many are accustomed to, and it will be a little thick. This Philodendron actually grows large and can be taller than a foot.
These plants are well delivered, tolerate transportation along the route well. Why should they be recommended because they are easy to care for and also easy to propagate.
Philodendron Jose Buono
The Philodendron Jose Buono is a beautiful plant with variegated mint-white or white leaf patterns. By the way, the leaves grow very large and this is a nice bonus for a good price. One could say that they rose and fell in value. And it is not surprising that this Philodendron is so in demand because, in addition to the chic appearance, they are also easy to care for.
Philodendron Paraiso Verde
And before moving on to the list of the worst plants for beginners, let's first finish the list of the best plants, and Philodendron Paraiso Verde is a wonderful Philodendron. It will be an excellent plant for beginners because it is absolutely not difficult to care for.
This beautiful plant resembles a little Monstera, namely with its aerial roots as antennae, and the base of the stem is thick and fleshy. The leaves are dense, elongated, mottled, one leaf may have more white or milky green, while the other may just grow bright green. The color of the leaf plate varies with lighting and may vary.
This vine grows climbing up, and the good news is that it grows very quickly and for this reason is suitable for beginners, and also because it is quite difficult to destroy such a plant.
Worst for beginners
Philodendron Luxurians
So the first plant on the list of not recommended Philodendrons for beginners will be the Philodendron Luxurians. This is a gorgeous, tall Philodendron, but it can be a real nightmare.
Outwardly, Luxurians are beautiful, they are decorated with large velvet leaves in the shape of a heart, this variety is also creeping, it just literally crawls along the surface.
But there are difficulties that you may face, and the first is that they are poorly transported, they are not shipped. The second is they need more water, much more water, than any other Philodendron.
Another problem that you may encounter is the dry tips of the leaf plate, they can appear quite easily and quickly. Further, the unpleasant moment will be the price, because it is high, and it is unlikely that it has decreased. The price is justified only by the fact that this species is difficult to obtain since it is difficult to reproduce them.
Philodendron Thai Sunrise
So, the next plant that is difficult for beginners to cope with will be the Philodendron Thai Sunrise, the rarest of all Philodendrons. They are not expensive plants, and that might appeal to you. The Philodendron Thai Sunrise is a beautiful plant and has a dark green border on its green leaves, the inside is speckled and kept away, and the leaf blade itself is elongated, but not large.
This species grows and grows slowly and is not affected by different lighting conditions. And there is one more disadvantage that may upset you, so this is the propagation of this plant and its appearance after pruning. After all, it is difficult to achieve some kind of propagation by pruning, even after that something incomprehensible happens to your plant, and its appearance is no longer the same as before.
Philodendron Domesticum Variegatum
Well, there is another plant that a beginner should not take on, and this is the Philodendron Domesticum Variegatum. Immediately I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the shape of the leaves can vary greatly.
It should also be noted that they grow slowly, although they become very beautiful plants when it comes to caring for them, it becomes a complete disaster. These Philodendrons are very finicky, so you need to follow all the tips for caring for them, and even this ultimately cannot guarantee you success with this type of plant.
So why is this Philodendron not suitable for beginners:
- it is not delivered or does not tolerate shipment
- it is difficult to propagate
- it is not a cheap plant
- demanding in care, one might say temperamental
Philodendron Pink Princess
Another beautiful plant, but completely unsuitable for a beginner, is the Philodendron Pink Princess.
The main problem with this plant is that it is difficult to grow beautifully if it is from a mother plant. So, your appearance may not be much like a real Pink Princess. With them, it is generally very difficult to maintain their pink variegation, and moreover, they become a little long-legged. And after such an unsuccessful reproduction, you may want to throw the plant away, but still do not do this, because the variegation and pinkness may still return, but it can take years.
Still not in favor of this plant is that they are very expensive.
Philodendron Verrucosum
So the next not recommended plant would be Philodendron Verrucosum. The Verrucosum plant can have several different forms, more than ten, but many prefer the original, calling it classic. This is an incredible plant, and for sure it is a favorite of many, but, Verrucosum is also a difficult plant to grow, so it can be very difficult for an inexperienced owner.
These plants are somewhat tough and don't like changes in soil pH. They also do not like excessive watering, they grow poorly, and since this Philodendron is a climbing species, it can grow in size if it has nothing to climb.
The second and perhaps it will be a great difficulty is the spider mite. This is a disaster for many growers, and this variety is very susceptible to the appearance of spider mites. To prevent the appearance of such pests, there must be a high level of humidity, preferably 80%.
