You have decided to buy a plant but have never had any? Don't stress, I am here to help you choose the easiest low-maintaining plants that are hard to kill. Before getting a plant, make sure you have read how to care for it and what kinds of environment it needs to grow.
Some of these require lots of sunlight, some can tolerate an almost no-light situation. None of them need to be watered often so breath calmly. When you are confident enough, those are also easy to propagate so you can have lots of your favorite plants at some time.
So let's talk about the ZZ plant, Sanseveria, Spider plant, Aloe Vera, and Dracena.
The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas)
The ZZ plant is a plant with tall, leafy fronds. It is a succulent (yes there are plenty of big succulents). Like all succulents, the ZZ plant likes lots of sunlight and survives outdoors if temperatures never drop below 40°F (5°C).
There are 4 main varieties of the ZZ plant: Raven ZZ (the darkest plant with black leaves), ZZ Zenzi, Dwarf ZZ plant or Zamicro, and ZZ plant Lucky classic.
Raven ZZ plant
How to care: provide lots of indirect sunlight and the plant will grow new leaves every month or two. ZZ plant will also tolerate less sunlight, it still can grow in a low-light situation. Water it when soil is completely dried out. If the leaves start yellowing, that a sign of overwatering. Mist the plant as often as you feel like it. The plant loves moisture.
The Sanseveria (Snake Plant)
The Snake plant is easy to grow and hard to kill, it can be grown in low light and need to be watered occasionally. There are over 70 varieties of the plant, the most common is the Sansevieria trifasciata.
How to care: if you see the leaves start curling that means the plant wants more sunlight but it still can grow under low light condition. The plant can tolerate a lack of sunlight and that's why it is one of the best plants for beginners. Water it when the soil is completely dried out. Under bright indirect sunlight, a Sanseveria will be growing faster so don't stress about putting it to a window with tons of sun.
The Dracaena
There are many varieties of Dracaena genus that are hardy houseplants. The most popular species are the Dracaena Marginata and Dracaena Fragrans. Those are easy-to-care plants and are ideal for beginners.
The best part about a Dracena is that it doesn't require lots of lights and doesn't need to be watered as often.
How to care: the palms love to be moist so do that every other day depending on how warm the weather is. Prune it occasionally so it grows better and avoid overwatering.
The Spider Plant
This is that kind of plant that is very hard to kill and it gives you lots of small spider plants every once in a while. It can withstand different types of light and would not hate you if you forget to water it.
How to care: the best place for the plant would be in direct sunlight but it will also grow under partial light. Avoid cold drafts and cut down watering in winter. Those are cute hanging plants that are easy to care for.
The Aloe Plant
You probably have something with aloe as it is used as a skin moisturizer and to heal minor cuts and ease sunburn. We all have that magical bootle with aloe that heals everything. It is also a succulent and as a succulent, it prefers lots of light and minimum water.
How to care: provide lots of bright but indirect sunlight. It can stay in the same container for years which is ideal for those who don't feel confident enough to repotting the plant.
